Why is educational planning important?

Students Are Continuing to Leave College Without a Degree: The number of students in the United States who have attended college but left before receiving a credential, certificate or degree has risen to 39 million, from 36 million in 2019, according to a new report, Black and Hispanic students continued to make up of disproportionate share of the total number.

More College Students Are Giving Up On Their College Dreams: While the number of students has been rising, however, so has the proportion who begin as full-time freshmen but fail to come back for a second year. Fifty-five percent who started in 2015 were gone by the following year, the most recent period for which the figures are available, according to U.S. Department of Education data analyzed by The Hechinger Report. That’s up from 44 percent two years before.

Earning a College Degree Impacts Career Earnings: For 25- to 34-year-olds who worked full time, year-round, higher educational attainment was associated with higher median earnings. This pattern was consistent for each year from 2010 through 2021. For example, in 2021, the median earnings of those with a master’s or higher degree were $74,600, some 21 percent higher than the earnings of those with a bachelor’s degree ($61,600). In the same year, the median earnings of those with a bachelor’s degree were 55 percent higher than the earnings of those who completed high school ($39,700).
